“Sapporo”, the center of Hokkaido

Sapporo, with the fifth largest population in Japan, combines the functions of a “city” with its buildings and residences with those of “nature” in the suburbs. This “harmony of city and nature” is the characteristic and attraction of Sapporo.

Hokkaido Jingu

The history of the shrine dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912), when the “Three Kaitakushi Deities” were enshrined to serve as a spiritual center for the pioneers of Hokkaido.

The vast precincts of the shrine, with its seasonal contrasts, offer a solemn atmosphere, and animals such as wild Ezo squirrels can be seen.

Both sides of the approach to the shrine are planted with Ezoyama cherry trees, and in spring, visitors can see a magnificent row of cherry trees.

Maruyama Zoo is also located nearby, making this a great place for the whole family to enjoy.

It opened in 1951 as the 10th zoo in Japan.

The zoo’s concept is to be a “Noah’s Ark” zoo, and the zoo is particularly focused on breeding polar bears.

For this reason, visitors can see baby polar bears and orangutans in the zoo.

The zoo also holds an event called “Doki-Doki Experience for Everyone.

Visitors can see owls and other animals in flight up close, and zookeepers provide detailed explanations of the zoo in nearly 30 different menus.

Moerenuma Koen

Isamu Noguchi, one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century, designed this vast park.

The vast park is based on Isamu Noguchi’s idea that “the entire park is a sculpture carved into the earth,” and is known for its artistic beauty everywhere you look. In particular, Moele Mountain, which was created by piling up unburnable garbage and public landfill, is a well-known landmark in the area. From the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the park’s landscape.

Moiwa Mountain

Moiwa is one of the three best night views in Japan.

Moiwa offers a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the city of Sapporo, the Ishikari Plain, and the Ishikari Bay Zouge mountain range.

After a major renovation in 2011, the entire building has been made barrier-free, and with souvenir shops and dining facilities, it is a spot that anyone can easily visit, regardless of age or sex, from families to the elderly.
